Disability Benefits Are Hard To Collect On
With all of the articles and news tabloid features about disability fraud, you would expect that it would be easy to get disability benefits. That is certainly the image that the press tends to portray. Everyday it seems, there are pictures of someone cheating on disability Social Security benefits. The TV shows clandestine footage of them doing shopping, going dancing or even running marathons while on disability insurance. The reality of the situation, however, is much more bleak than that. Although I am not surprised that occasionally someone gets a disability benefit who doesn’t deserve it, there are thousands upon thousands of people who have to struggle to get the Social Security disability insurance that they need.
I thought I knew all about disability insurance, but I was wrong. When I was injured on the job, I had assumed that applying for disability benefits would be a cinch. Once they saw that I had hurt myself and was unable to work, I would be able to get unemployment disability insurance, Social Security benefits, and all the rest. As it turns out, my boss was a hard-hearted, corrupt individual. He was worried about lawsuits, you see, so rather than making me happy and hoping that I wouldn’t sue, they actually drove me to suing. They wanted to prove that I had been to disabled through my own negligence. I had given my health to that company and now they wanted to cheat me out of my disability benefits!
As a matter of fact, I never would have gone to a disability attorney if they had not treated me so shabbily. I wasn’t expecting to get rich – I was just expecting to have enough money from disability insurance to make a full recovery so I could go back to work. Because they were making that impossible, I knew that I had to sue for my disability benefits. The irony of the situation is that even with court costs alone, the case would cost them more than it would have to simply treat me fairly. We ended up settling out of court. I hate to brag, but I did very well in the case. As it turns out, I have a lot more money coming in than I would have if I had not been injured on the job! It is good to see justice done in a country where working stiffs like you and me are so often mistreated!
