Old House - Use Recycled Building Materials
Building with recycled materials can be a good way to both save money and do something good for the environment. More and more today, people use building materials recycled from other construction projects in addition to new building materials as a way to build more responsibly and save old junk from going right out to the land fill. Think about it. When just one multi story apartment building is destroyed, it produces tons upon tons of debris, and in traditional situations, all of it is immediately hauled off to the landfilled to sit for all eternity in a vat of debris. It does not rot, it does not decay – it just sits there and accumulates and takes up space. This is why using building materials recycled is such an important thing.
Recycled building materials are not always cheaper. Sometimes, they are actually quite a bit more expensive than using non-recycled materials for building. The availability of building materials recycled really depends on where you are and what you want. For example, if you live in California, and are looking for redwood building materials recycled from older houses, you really should not have all that much of a hard time finding them and they will probably be better priced than getting new redwood. In addition, you will not have the looting of the remaining redwood forests on your conscience, which is a powerful plus.
But if you are looking for these same building materials recycled in, say, Maine or New York, you are likely to have a heck of a time finding them. In that situation, although it would cost a pretty penny to buy them new, it probably would cost a good bit more to have building materials recycled and shipped from California. The fact is, there is not the same type of national distribution chain for building with recycled materials, because what there is to use depends on what has been knocked down, or at least disassembled. But still, if you are willing to make some compromises, you should be able to find building materials recycled to fit your needs.
The best building materials recycled from local construction supplies will be almost impossible to distinguish from new materials.. Often using building materials recycled allows you to make use of things like marble and other highly valuable substances for a much cheaper price than you would normally have to pay if you are lucky to find the right supplier.
