The Agony Of Selling Advertising

I used to sell advertising space and it’s not something I would hurry back to. It wasn’t arduous, but I found it relentlessly repetitive and boring. Once you’ve sold one ad, you’ve sold them all. It’s a grind, only broken by walks to the coffee machine and a hurried sandwich at lunchtime. The most difficult thing about advertising selling was trying to motivate myself on a Monday morning. The Boomtown Rats made that record for me. Then, Friday afternoon would come and it was hard to stay awake. We all dashed out of the office when the shift ended like a bunch of school kids allowed out to play.

The type of advertisement I dealt with was hotels and holiday accommodation. Some of this was for huge hotel corporations and some was for one owner bed and breakfast set ups. I preferred to deal with the private owners of small establishments than with the big hotels. They were very proud of their businesses and had a personal stake in them. Advertising selling is a lot more bearable if you actually make someone happy and I built up a good relationship with some of the owners who liked to renew their ads every year.

The job description I had involved a combination of finding new business and trying to persuade existing clients to renew. There was a sales target attached to each and all the advertising selling teams were under a lot of pressure. I specialized in holiday accommodation which offered facilities for the disabled. This could get very complicated because descriptions had to be precise. A small bed and breakfast may have grab rails in the bathrooms and so on but not the facilities to cater for someone who was wheelchair bound. Some would take wheelchair users only if their carer came too. The distance from the accommodation to the local amenities had to be described accurately.

Descriptions in general could be a bit of a nightmare. Occasionally an owner or manager would exaggerate their facilities or mislead us in some way. The trouble was, if a client would complain that something did not match the advertisement copy, it was us that were held responsible. Our advertising selling company was held to account because we were responsible for the accuracy of the content.

I usually called 50 or so potential clients each day and I had a database containing 400 existing clients. I would have loved the company to pay me to visit each and every establishment on the books, but they never were inclined to. It was impractical to get independent endorsements for them, I would have to do it all day. So we were expected to check, but we didn’t and it got us into trouble sometimes. Advertising selling is behind me now and I don’t miss it!

It’s Blue Has A Ball And A Point - A Pen

I admit it, I’m prejudiced. Yep, you heard me. I reject certain writing utensils because they are not to my liking. For instance, I only use a blue ink ballpoint pen. I will only use one with black ink if I am absolutely forced to in a certain situation, but in my house and at my desk at work, they are all blue. It has to be a ballpoint pen, I can’t stand writing with a pencil or markers. Whenever my co-workers want to play a joke on me, they will make my blue ballpoint pen disappear and put pencils on my desk. I pretend to laugh and joke around about it, but I’m secretly wishing someone would swipe the one thing they are adamant about and see how they like it!

I’m not sure why I have a blue ballpoint pen fetish. I never used to be like that until I began college. I mean, in my younger school years, we were always required to use pencils. So, I’m not really sure where my addiction to the ballpoint pen stems from. Why I only like blue ink is another mystery to me. I tried to force myself to use a black ballpoint pen for an entire week once and it was incredibly annoying. I didn’t last more than two days. My husband made fun of me for weeks. Much to my pleasure, there are many styles of ballpoint pens in existence these days. I can special order them or buy them in packs. With as quickly as I go through a ballpoint pen, I hesitate to special order any and spend the money. My boss gives me a new box once a month. He has come to learn how I am. Sure, I could order the refillable ballpoint pen but that can also be an inconvenience. As most households have, there are several dozen ballpoint pens to be found throughout my home. I can even find a stray ballpoint pen in my vehicle or my purse from time to time.

Of course, they are always with blue ink. Some of my co-workers get a kick out of telling people that I’m prejudiced against black ink. At first, it was funny. After hearing goofy humor about it for a while, it grew old. Just because I prefer to only use a blue ballpoint pen doesn’t make me a joke, it just means that I’m very picky and decisive on what I want. I hope that all of their ballpoint pens leak all over them. So there.

More Then Cardboard - Boxes And Packaging

As a board member in an international shipping company, I can tell you that boxes and packaging are more complicated than you might at first think. When many people think about boxes and packaging, they think first about the type of containers that are most common. I do not know off hand how high a percentage of the goods sent by mail are sent in plain cardboard boxes, but I know it is in the 80s or 90s. Things like books, clothing and even comparatively fragile items like dishes are often sent with standard packaging and boxes. They are simply wrapped in bubble wrap and put into a box filled with Styrofoam peanuts. Then whoever has sent them sits back and simply hopes for the best.

There are much more expensive and high-tech choices for boxes and packaging that are sometimes used for special orders. From my experience, I would say that something like 95 percent of the stuff that is put into sturdy cardboard boxes, wrapped up in the correct way makes it there safe and sound. For some rare and precious items, 95 percent is simply not enough. For example, if you are sending an antique vase by freight, you will probably want to be completely, 100 percent sure that nothing at all bad can happen to it, no matter what. If that is the case, you will ask for more than cardboard and air bubbles.

Advanced boxes and packaging are often actually not much more complicated than the simple ones. Hard plastic cases, with the proper padding built in, decrease the danger to most shipments to almost nothing. Unless the case is forcibly beaten repeatedly against the wall or run over by a truck several times, it is quite unlikely that anything at all could even possibly happen to what is inside. Usually, when we are asked to box and package an antique, or something else equally valuable, we build a custom case for it out of plastic before we send it out. In 23 years, we have only had one failure with this approach.

There are certain items that need even more sophisticated boxes and packaging. For example, if something is extremely temperature sensitive, the boxes and packaging must include a means to regulate the temperature, which is extremely costly and difficult to make. Only a few companies handle orders of this kind, but we have stayed away from them.

Don’t Cheat On A School Essay

People are always worrying about school essay writing services online. You see an article about it at least once a week in many papers. Apparently, teenagers are downloading school essays more than ever before and trying to pass them off as their own, or so we are to believe. Online essay editing services, free papers and even customize essay writing is supposed to be a booming business. Nonetheless, too little attention is paid to the legitimate uses of these essay databases.

I have been teaching high school English for about a decade now, so I have seen pretty much everything there is to see in the field. I admit that I have seen teenagers download school essays, but I have also had students who use them for legitimate purposes. The thing is, in modern education we don’t really teach essay writing correctly. Teenagers are expected to write a school essay when they have only read a few essays in their lives. They don’t know how to do it. Some of them are good at handing the teacher what he or she wants, but few of them really understand the technique of writing a school essay.

This is where online essays can be really useful. Whether you are writing a school entrance essay or a simple essay in high school, looking at other examples of the form can really help you out. As a matter of fact, I encourage my children students to download essays online. I know when they are pirating other people’s work. Each of them have a unique writing style and none of them can fool me with counterfeit work that is not their own. Although they can’t steal other people’s words, they can steal their ideas. Taking ideas isn’t forbidden. As long as they don’t plagiarize, I am happy with it.

I really don’t think most kids want to cheat. If you give them the right opportunities to write their school essay, they will take them. The reason kids cheat is because they don’t know what they are doing. A lot of people think it is a failure in ethics, but I think it is a failure in teaching. When teachers are finally doing their jobs correctly, students will not download school essays anymore. That is the best way to get the educational system to change for the better. Students have to take responsibility for the choices they make, but so do teachers.

Doing The Best School Fund Raiser

The state of education in the US is not as good as it use to be. Many schools suffer because of cut backs, and this means that some very important programs have to be cut. Though things like music and sports may not seem as important as reading and writing, they are vital components of a well rounded education. They have benefits far beyond what someone might think. Those who study music often do better academically, and sports bring about teamwork and discipline. Some students are lost without those things. This means the school fund raiser is even more important than ever before.

When I was going through my education, the school fund raiser was usually about extra things that needed to be paid for. Sometimes it was for new uniforms, or to help pay for special events like the Prom or other school functions. Most parents gladly helped, but it wasn’t always a matter of a good education. Students often volunteered to help and many things sold were donated by the parents for the betterment of the student body. Today, it is a whole new ballgame.

Today, some of the school fund raiser events are for more important things like keeping the music program going or to fund sports. These events won’t completely save things, but they can help keep them going along with the funds the schools can get fill out the difference. There are times when the best school fund raiser is not enough and some programs are axed. It is a bigger problem in large city districts, but the smaller schools that where once thought to be better of seem to be having problems as well.

When confronted with a school fund raiser, you should keep in mind that your donation or your purchase can make a world of difference to the children in your home and the ones in your community. If you are looking for ideas to help out, there are many great ones online. Some of these have kits for the school fund raiser and others have products that tend to do well for this type of endeavor. Events like car washes also work well for raising funds and this is something the student can do without having to give up anything, but their free time. Bake sales work well and so do live performances if performers can be found that are willing to donate time. If they know the cause, most will do so happily.

Steal An Avalanche? School Lockers

When in school you have to have a place to put your stuff. When I was in elementary school we had our desk in which to store our stuff, but we also pretty much stayed in the same room all day. When it came time to go to high school, we had to have school lockers to store books between classes and as a place to keep our coats and other belongings. They seem like a great idea and they are, but there are some issues I have always had with them.

The worst thing about school lockers is the lock. Not every school I went to had them, but many came so that you could put a lock on if you wished. I never wanted to put a lock on my school lockers and I never had a problem with theft. I went to a small school and theft was never a huge issue for anyone. I never left anything worth stealing in there anyway, so I guess it was never a worry to begin with for us.

I went to one school that had combination locks on the school lockers. There was no way around it. I always had trouble. If I could actually remember my combination I would get into my locker, but sometimes that didn’t even work. The locks on these school lockers were hard to use and if you were off even a tiny bit the locker would not open. I was late for class so many times that I started leaving my locker door open a touch so that I didn’t have to fight with the lock.

When I did manage to get mine open, I had another common problem that some have with school lockers. Once in a while there would be an avalanche. I was always late and always in a hurry. This meant that every piled up in there, and if I didn’t have time to clean it out, things would slide out and land on my feet. It’s a common pitfall of school lockers though and I know I was not the only one. Many times we had just two minutes in between class, and who wants to stay after to clean out school lockers? The worst part was that these lockers were stacked two high. The boy who had his locker under me often had things land on his head. It’s a miracle that he spoke to me at all.

Get Blinded By School Science Projects

I remember that I had to do quite a few school science projects while I was in school. I used to get really excited about these because I was very interested in science. My grades were not always that great, but that did not mean I was not interested in what I was learning. There were some years when I would have to do a project and I would have no idea what to do. Other years, I would be so excited about my project that I would start long before our teachers even began to talk about it. I don’t know if that makes me a geek, but this is what I did.

We started doing school science projects a very young age and my school system. I believe the first year I did one was in fourth grade. I’m not sure if this is early or not, but the school science projects that we put together were not mandatory. I asked my teacher why they were not necessary for a grade and she told me that many students would not be able to put together science projects that were very complicated. It was more of a trial run for when they would be something that had to be done for grade in later years.

I remember quite clearly the very first of my school science projects. I had no Idea what I was going to do, and I ended up with very little time to do it. My mother was going to school at the time and she also worked the night shift. This meant she did not have a lot of time to help me and there were no other adults in my life that could help. I ended up using a glass of water and a straw. I can’t remember exactly what I was trying to prove with it, but the project was about how a finger placed over a straw full of liquid will hold the liquid in even when the straw is removed from the cup. I am very grateful that that project was not graded.

As the years went by, my school science projects became more complicated. At that time my dad had time to help me and this is when I put up my best projects. He would often help me come up with an idea and would help me work through whatever theory it was I was working with. If I had to build something complicated he would always want to assist me. Unlike many other parents though, he would never do my school science projects for me. He was always there for the help I needed and to offer me encouragement, but he would never have dreamed of allowing me to miss out on this learning experience. If your children have school science projects coming up, remember that they need to learn from these and try to let them do the major thinking on their own.

Strike A Balance - Science Fair Topics

When I was a kid, science fair was one of the high points of the year. I was brought up on 80s movies. I saw “War Games”, “The Manhattan Project”, and all kinds of other movies where ways kids gained recognition and adventure by virtue of their scientific exploits. In reality, I was not a whiz kid. I was pretty smart, but science was not my forte. I was much too impractical, and wasn’t disciplined enough in my studies. As a result of this, I always had trouble picking out science fair topics.

In the end, my dad would usually help me pick out the science fair project topics. I would start with something too grand for me to really do at my age. For example, I would want to invent a perpetual motion machine when I heard it was not possible. I actually wanted to disprove modern physics. Another time, I wanted to build a laser although I barely understood the principles of optics.

My dad would always help me to narrow things down a little bit. As a matter of fact, he had some of the best science fair topics in the competition. Although I never did very well in state competitions, I always did pretty well in our high school science fair. One of my best science fair topics involved the study of different plants. I was trying to calculate the perfect combination of light, soil condition and water for growing tomato plants. I actually designed a very sophisticated trial to evaluate several factors at once. It involved a control group and several different trial groups each consisting of five plants.

It is hard to overrate the importance of science fair topics in coming up with a successful project. You see, your science fair projects have to strike the perfect balance. On the one hand, you don’t want a boring science fair topic. You don’t want something that has been done before so many times that it is of no interest to anyone. You want to challenge yourself. On the other hand, your science fair topics can’t become too ambitious. If you try to bite off more than you can chew, you’ll never get anywhere. When you are a kid, figuring out just the right level can be exceedingly challenging. That is why it is so important to get help from an adult with their science fair ideas. After all, there’s no substitute for experience.

Get Out Of Bed Sleepy Head - Starting School

Once you’re grown, it can be a challenge to recall those younger years. I’m referring to the really younger years that occurred during the first section of life. Think 0 to age 5. Yeah, pretty far back huh? What can you seriously remember from those times? Well, one thing I do recall rather vividly is starting school. Monumental moments such as this do stick with you. In fact, it’s a challenge to get rid of them. Not that you’d want to do such a thing. Come on, starting school isn’t really that bad, is it?

While you may not remember a single day in kindergarten, I’ll bet you recall the first grade or at least elementary school. This was back when all was light and things were simple. Homework didn’t amount to much and you actually had snack time. WOW, was that ever sweet! I honestly think snack time and nap time should be a part of every grade up until graduation. We should put this to a vote. Anyway, I’m sure you remember that time toward the end of summer break. All the routine commercials played on television, advertising back to school attire and academic supplies. We all got used to this after a few years of grade school, but we certainly dreaded it at the same time. In reality we weren’t anxious to start school again. Especially since summer break flew by way too quickly. And none of us wanted to head off to the local Wal-Mart for infinite school supplies. This only meant that the new year was right upon us. In no time whatsoever we’d be awaking to the horrific scream of an alarm clock and climbing clumsily out of our beds. YUCK! The memories are flooding back in full force now. Thank God that portion of my life is complete!

If you’re having second thoughts and feelings of anxiety about starting school, I suggest a positive outlook at a wonderful new year, overflowing with exciting experiences and new friends. You can’t beat the friends part. Focus on the good points and ditch the negative aspects like the alarm clock and crowded school bus. You just might even end up with a few cool school supplies. I always looked forward to those mechanical pencils.
